Album Review: Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness

Like so many others, I’ve grown up with Andrew McMahon. Whether it was Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin or his self-titled work, his journey of growing up, being diagnosed with Leukemia in 2005 and his recovery has shone through his music and inspired me as I grew up.

I was sad when I heard the announcement of the disbandment of Jack’s Mannequin, but knew Andrew wouldn’t be leaving music forever.

While I wasn’t a huge fan of the Pop Underground EP’s electronic-type sound, Andrew’s new release, “Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness” brings a bit of that sound mixed with later Jack’s Mannequin and I’m really loving it.

Over the last year, McMahon and his wife have had a baby, a major life change that brings new inspiration to his music.

The album features several tracks about his current life, including lead single “Cecelia And The Satellite” about his new daughter, and my personal favorite, “Maps For The Getaway”, which makes for a great closer, something he’s mastered over the course of his many records.

The use of piano is strong throughout, and some of the verses callback to the glory days of SoCo and Jack’s Mannequin. I found that particularly evident on “All Our Lives”, “See Her On The Weekend”, “Halls” and “Maps For The Getaway”. There’s nothing hugely sweeping, and many tracks are great for just laying on your bed, listening and relaxing.

If you’re a fan of Andrew in any incarnation, you’ll find something to love on “Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness”.

Fearless Records Signs As It Is

The transatlantic pop-rock quintet hails from Brighton, UK consisting of Patty Walters (vocals), Benjamin Biss (vocals, guitar), Andy Westhead (guitar), Patrick Foley (drums), Alistair Testo (bass). The band has established a devout fan following with their heart-on-sleeve, honest and relatable lyrics, charged with pop-rock melodies. Managed by KMGMT (home of other Fearless acts such as Tonight Alive and The Summer Set), As It Is has molded their craft, steadily building their reputation as one of UK’s brightest new names.

“I haven’t found a way yet of wording how surreal and wonderful it feels, signing to one of my favorite record labels. Fearless and their artists have played a huge role in my life, inspiring me massively, giving me something to aspire to reach,” states lead singer Patty Walters. “To be able to say something as immense as ‘My band was the first UK band that ever signed to Fearless Records,’ is mind-blowing to me.”

Guitarist and vocalist Benjamin Biss adds, “One of the things I’ve always loved about Fearless is that they have a relatively small roster but I know every single one of those bands. Chances like this don’t come around too often, especially for UK bands in a genre that is mainly dominated by American acts; so we want to help prove that the UK can hold their own in the scene.”

Next week, the band will go into the studio with producer James Paul Wisner (Paramore, Dashboard Confessional) to record their Fearless debut, to release in 2015. The new album will follow their latest release This Mind Of Mine, which was funded completely through their loyal fanbase. Check out their signing video below and visit to stay up to date.
