Concert Review – Yellowcard “Ocean Avenue Acoustic” Tour – Sept. 18

I headed to The Fillmore Silver Spring on Sept. 18 to catch Yellowcard on their Ocean Avenue Acoustic Tour.

Props to the venue for putting together a great playlist of songs from the 2003/2004 era to play before the show. I think it really helped get the crowd in the mood. They had everything from Fall Out Boy to The Starting Line to Acceptance to Taking Back Sunday, reminding us all how amazing that time was for music.

Geoff Rickley, of Thursday, opened up the show with an acoustic set of originals, some Thursday songs and a couple of covers. I always knew Thursday was an influential band to the scene, but I was never a fan of their music and I can’t say I ever saw them live, save for maybe passing by their set at Warped Tour, but Geoff put on a good show for those Thursday fans in the crowd.

Yellowcard was up next and I hadn’t realized that they would also be playing an electric set, which was exciting.

They started by playing “Ocean Avenue” from start to finish, but, like the recent album, the songs weren’t just Ryan Key with a guitar. The full band playing an awesome set, full of energy and nostalgia.

They dedicated “View From Heaven” to Josh from the 9:30 Club, who recently committed suicide, which was a somber moment in an otherwise upbeat set.

After taking a quick break, the band came back out and powered through another set full of songs mostly from their most recent albums, “When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes” and “Southern Air”, which really got the crowd pumped up.

Yellowcard is one of my all time favorite bands to see live because the energy level they sustain throughout their show is amazing. They have a way of keeping the crowd in the palm of their hands, and they sound awesome when they do.

If you get a chance to see this tour, don’t miss it. It’s perfect for fans old and new. It brought back a ton of memories for me of an album that introduced me to the scene and opened the doors to my discovery of a ton of amazing music.

Check out photos from the show here.
